Hydro Heritage Trail

Hydro Heritage Trail

Hydro Heritage Trail

You can’t help but be wowed by the crisscrossing network of canals and impressive power stations in the Mackenzie Region. The hydroelectricity network supplies a whopping 20% of our country’s electricity. The project started in 1968 and continued day and night for 16 years, employing over 1,500 workers.

The self-drive Hydro Heritage Trail is a great insight into the engineering expertise and history that went into creating the hydropower system, and the communities that grew around it.

The trail recommends 18 sites of interest around the hydro scheme. It’s also a great way to explore the Mackenzie Region and discover new places you may have never seen. The trail includes a purpose-built rowing course, dams, power stations, large machinery, spillways and more.

You can grab a brochure from Twizel Promotions in the town centre, or view the online brochure here: https://bit.ly/HydroHeritageTrail
