Church of the Good Shepherd

One of the region’s most famous and photographed icons is the Church Of The Good Shepherd on the stunning lakefront of Lake Tekapo.

This charming church holds a special place in the hearts of locals. It was built in memory of the pioneers of the Mackenzie, from local stone gathered from within 5 miles of the site, with the aim to simply be part of the landscape. It is a treasured heritage building and is also a place of worship.

Locals and visitors gather every Sunday and the church welcomes Christians of all traditions, cultures and backgrounds. It is also still used for weddings and funerals, and visitors can request a private tour directly from the church.

One of the most remarkable features of the Church of the Good Shepherd is the sense of connection, of belonging, and of being part of the natural environment. In this sacred place, you can simply let go, breathe deeply and allow yourself to be renewed.
