4WD Adventure

The Mackenzie Region has some of the most unique and impressive natural landscapes around, so why not jump in a 4WD and roam the backcountry in style?

Whether you want to explore public land in your own vehicle or join a guided trip and head into private land – you can guarantee you won’t be disappointed. One company running guided 4WD trips is Tekapo Adventures.

There are a number of great places you can take your 4WD vehicle, just make sure you know where you’re headed as some of the tracks are not suitable for all types of 4WDs. Most tracks involve river crossings so caution and skill are vital.

If you’re wanting to make it a multi-day adventure, there are plenty of DOC huts in the Mackenzie Region with limited facilities (no charge) or standard huts with a heating source (a backcountry hut ticket or pass is required for these huts). Most are quite small so pack a tent in your vehicle just in case.

As with all adventures into the backcountry, adhere to the safety guidelines, check current track and weather conditions before heading out, tell someone your plans and most importantly, enjoy getting off the grid!

Explore the backcountry in a 4WD – just one of our #52Reasons why you should visit the Legendary Mackenzie!
